American’s most trusted medical authority shows you how to prevent and treat heart disease.

When you or someone you love is diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, it’s important to know the facts, which can help save a life. In the American Medical Association Guide to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease, you will learn everything you need to know about heart disease to ensure a long, full, and active life.

Authoritative and up to date, the American Medical Association Guide to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease explains the most common forms of heart and blood vessel disease and lays out practical strategies to get you on the road to better health. The book also provides up-to-date information on women and their unique heart disease risks and symptoms as well as information on hart6-healthy eating, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s DASH diet.

Even if heart disease runs in your family, you can still lower your risk of developing it by following the simple guidelines found in this comprehensive resource. For every 3 pounds you lose, there is a corresponding drop of about 2mm Hg in your diastolic pressure, and by bringing down your blood pressure to healthy levels, your risk of stroke can be reduced by 35 to 50 percent. If you have already had a heart attack or a stroke, this book offers vital practical information on preventing another one.

Highlighting prevention, lifestyle changes, testing, and treatments, the American Medical Association Guide to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease provides you and your loved ones with the essential tools you need to reclaim a healthier life.

From the Inside Flap
Heart disease is the leading cause of death and a major cause of disability in both men and women in the United States today. The good news is that with knowledge and practical lifestyle changes, heart disease is both treatable and preventable. In the American Medical Association Guide to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease, you’ll learn everything you need to know to lessen your risk of cardiovascular disease, take control of it if you have it, or help a loved one.

Heart and blood vessel disease takes many forms, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, vascular heart disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, and stroke. Drawing on the most authoritative information and the most up-to-date research, the American Medical Association Gide to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease helps pinpoint your major risk factors and shows you how to deal with them. In this comprehensive guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about your heart and how it functions, about why it is so important to quit smoking, and about heart-conscious ways to exercise. You’ll also learn the critical warning signs you should tell your doctor about right away, and how heart disease manifests itself differently in women and men.

The book empowers you to take charge of your family’s treatment regimen by providing essential facts on vital topics including:

How to control your cholesterol level and why this is so crucial

The latest information on medications, including high blood pressure medications such as ACE inhibitors, angiogenesis 2 receptor blocks, cholesterol-lowering statins, antiarrhythmia drugs, and more

Women-specific heart disease symptoms

How to lower your blood pressure in as little as 2 to 4 weeks through diet

Painless ways to incorporate exercise into your day

The role of inflammation in atherosclerosis

The effects of saturated fats and trans fats on cholesterol levels

Symptoms of cardiac arrest, stoke, angina, heartburn, and arrhythmias-and how to tell them apart

How birth control pills, pregnancy, menopause, and hormone therapy can affect a woman’s cardiovascular health

A blood test to see if you need to lower cholesterol is often a part of a normal, routine physical. This and other tests can help make you aware of potential health problems and start you on the path of treating them, before they become serious health issues.

A test that will determine if you have high cholesterol is often given to those who have outward symptoms. It is extremely rare for someone to have such high cholesterol that it shows in their skin, but some people do. The condition is called xanthomatosis where yellow fatty deposits show up in the skin. This rare genetic disease can create extremely high cholesterol levels.

More commonly a person may be tested for high cholesterol if they have other risk factors for coronary artery disease. These may include a family history, being obese, having a diet that is high in cholesterol or fat, or if they are heavy smokers or drinkers. Often changing the lifestyle or diet can lower cholesterol. Because high cholesterol can add to the risk factors for heart disease by making the arteries become hardened or clogged, screening for cholesterol is one more way to monitor those risk factors.

Once it has been determined that you have high cholesterol, your doctor may put you on medication. He or she will then want to continually monitor your cholesterol levels to see if the drugs are effective. Most statin drugs used to reduce fat in the blood and lower cholesterol work well. However, they do have many undesirable side effects that go along with the positive effects of lowering cholesterol.

A carefully planned diet and exercise routine can lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol in the body so that the good cholesterol can help combat the bad. This can be done relatively quickly and without the side effects of prescription medications.

Health is very valuable thing in life. The following is the article on healthy weight. This is a very important article to read. Everybody needs health. Healthy body enables someone to do his/her daily activities comfortably. Keeping healthy body is a must. So, Read the following article:
—————————————————————–

Healthy Weight – What Is a Healthy Weight?

A healthy weight is the weight your body naturally settles into when you consistently eat a nutritious diet, are physically active, and balance the calories you eat with the physical activity you do.

But weight is only one measure of your health. People who are thin but don’t exercise or eat nutritious foods aren’t necessarily healthy just because they are thin. A person who is overweight according to body mass index (BMI) charts may be healthy if he or she eats a variety of healthy foods and exercises regularly.

How much you eat is not the only determinant of your weight. Your age, metabolism, genetics, and physical activity level also play an important role in your weight, health, and risk for disease. So it’s important that you avoid comparing yourself to others and that you determine the lifestyle changes you need to make to maintain a healthy weight.

Nutrition is an extremely important component of being healthy. Consistently eating a balanced diet is far better than dieting for quick weight loss and then returning to your previous eating habits.

Physical activity is key to improving your health and preventing serious illness. Experts advise doing either of these things to get and stay healthy:2

* Do moderate activity for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week or more. Moderate activity is equal to a brisk walk, cycling about 10 to 12 miles per hour (mph), sailing, or shooting hoops. You notice your heart beating faster with this kind of activity.
* Do vigorous activity for at least 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week or more. Vigorous activity is equal to jogging, cycling at least 12 mph, cross-country skiing, or playing a basketball game. You breathe rapidly and your heart beats much faster with this kind of activity.

Being active in several chunks of 10 minutes or more throughout the day can count towards the above recommendations. You can choose to do one or both types of activity. Always ask your doctor whether it is safe for you to start a fitness program.

Regular moderate-intensity physical activity reduces the risk of

Understanding cholesterol numbers is important for those who want to be healthy. By understanding cholesterol numbers we can manage our behavior, especially the habit of eating. To know more about cholesterol numbers, you can read the article below. This article on cholesterol numbers is taken from www.webmd.com. Here is the original article on cholesterol numbers originally entitled “High Cholesterol: Understanding Cholesterol Numbers”.

High Cholesterol: Understanding Cholesterol Numbers

Cholesterol levels should be measured at least once every five years by everyone over the age of 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipoprotein profile. Experts recommend that men aged 35 and older and women age 45 and older be routinely screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes:

LDL (low density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called “bad” cholesterol)

HDL (high density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called “good” cholesterol)

Triglycerides (fats carried in the blood from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol or sugar in the body are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells throughout the body.)

Results of your blood test will come in the forms of numbers. Here is how to interpret your cholesterol numbers:

LDL Cholesterol

LDL cholesterol can build up on the walls of your arteries and increase your chances of getting heart disease. That is why LDL cholesterol is referred to as “bad” cholesterol. The lower your LDL cholesterol number, the better it is for your health. The table below explains what the numbers mean.

LDL Cholesterol

LDL-Cholesterol Category

Less than 100

Optimal

100 – 129

Near optimal/above optimal

130 – 159

Borderline high

160 – 189

High

190 and above

Very high

If you have heart disease or blood vessel disease, some experts recommend that you should try to get your LDL cholesterol below 70. For people with diabetes or other multiple risk factors for heart disease, the treatment goal is to reach an LDL of less than 100.

HDL Cholesterol

When it comes to HDL cholesterol — “good” cholesterol — the higher the number, the better it is for your health. This is because HDL cholesterol protects against heart disease by taking the “bad” cholesterol out of your blood and keeping it from building up in your arteries. The table below explains what the numbers mean.

HDL Cholesterol

HDL-Cholesterol Category

60 and above

High; Optimal; helps to lower risk of heart disease

Less than 40 in men and less than 50 in women

Low; considered a risk factor for heart disease

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are the chemical form in which most fat exists in food and the body. A high triglyceride level has been linked to the occurrence of coronary artery disease in some people. Here’s the breakdown.

Triglycerides

Triglyceride Category

Less than 150

Normal

150 – 199

Borderline high

200 – 499

High

500 or higher

Very high

Total Cholesterol

Your total blood cholesterol is a measure of LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and other lipid components. Doctors recommend total cholesterol levels below 200

Total Cholesterol

Category

Less than 200

Desirable

200 – 239

Borderline High

240 and above

High

——————————————————————–

About atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is hardening of the arteries, a common disease of the major blood vessels characterised by fatty streaks along the vessel walls and by deposits of cholesterol and calcium.

Atherosclerosis of arteries supplying the heart is called coronary artery disease. It can restrict the flow of blood to the heart, which often triggers heart attacks—the leading cause of death in Americans and Europeans. Atherosclerosis of arteries supplying the legs causes a condition called intermittent claudication, which is characterised by pain in the legs after walking short distances.

People with elevated cholesterol levels are much more likely to have atherosclerosis than people with low cholesterol levels. Many important nutritional approaches to protecting against atherosclerosis are aimed at lowering serum cholesterol levels.

People with diabetes are also at very high risk for atherosclerosis, as are people with elevated triglycerides and high homocysteine.
